I just went to the record store for the first time in a WHILE w/ Alex. Spent a lil bit too much money. No more record shopping for this girl for another month. BUT, this is what I picked up...

The Rose Garden, S/T

Only album from a sort-of unremarkable 60s folk-rock group. I bought it because it had two Gene Clark songs I'd never heard before. When I got home and looked the band up on the internet, it was kinda funny because Allmusic says super geeky Byrds fans will buy it because it has the only recordings of two Gene Clark songs on it. Bahhhhh. The girl in the band has a really deep voice and I guess the song "Next Plane to London" was a hit back in the day. Listening to it; just got to side two. So far I like everything except the lead vocals on their cover of "She Belongs to Me." Um also they have a song called "Flower Town" and somehow Kim Fowley has a writing credit on it. It's so serious. BAHHHH.


The Bee Gees, "Bee Gee's 1st"

Not gonna lie, I'm happy I got this, but I wish it was Robin Gibb's super bitter solo record "Robin's Reign" instead.

The Rolling Stones, "Flowers"

Okay I know it's almost "Between the Buttons" but I don't care because it's mono and the first pressing. And it has so many hits. And I looked it up on ebay and it's going for more than twice what I paid. Woooooooo. And I like the cover. And mono.




The Rubinoos, "Back to the Drawing Board"

I remember when that Avril Lavigne song came out (ya know the one that Lil Mama later collaborated w/ Avril on a remix version) and Zak sent me a link to a fake Rubinoos MySpace that had the song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and it was the same song, basically. MIND BLOWN. Then 4 years later I bought this album because it was rainy and I needed to spend money on records so I wouldn't be depressed on account of the weather. Look at that cover. How could you be depressed.




Joni Mitchell, "Blue"

An all-time fave that for some reason I didn't own in this format.

I probably watched this movie once a week before I made friends in 7th grade. This was the last album I bought at Harmony House, back when Harmony House still existed and I could ride my bike to it. Afterward I probably rode my bike to get ice cream by myself, because, ya know, I was old enough finally.

"White Blood Cells," The White Stripes

This is actually probably the first album that made me realize people made cool noises on guitar. I think I was a little bit scared of it though. I mean, compare the opening riff of "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" to the John Shanks produced "Everywhere" off of "The Spirit Room." Sometimes I really miss making mix cds for myself with Michelle Branch, Jewel, and the White Stripes. I always made cheesy printed out covers for them too. Those were the days.

Today I was driving home from the doctor (I got stung by a stupid bee and have an infection) listening to "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac, and feeling pretty out of it after taking 6 doses of a Medrol pack after not eating enough. Somewhere on I-696 between Gratiot and John R I thought it would be AWESOME to come home and blog about the most important albums in my life since freshman year of high school, chronologically. Not because people care, but because sometimes making lists like that is fun, if you try to not think about how it's kinda limiting because most people who actually love music love music too much to make lists about it, which is how I usually tend to feel.

So I started making a list on my laptop in "Stickies." Some years were easy, but for some I had so many albums I wanted to include I felt ridiculous. My limit of one per year became two, and then some years got three. Now I just feel like a big goof, which is what usually happens when I try to come up with lists of albums.

I'm going to post it anyway, mostly because it'll probably be funny to look back at it in a year and judge myself. I remember being in high school and making lists of my favorite albums in my dIaRy. Or favorite bands, or whatever. When I like a band I tend to get super obsessed within a couple days and get really overwhelmed if I don't have some nerdy outlet for it.

For some reason, it was harder picking multiple albums per year than just one. So I whittled it down again to just one per year. Except for the first one, oops. Sorry to "Fun House," "Horses," "The Marked Men," "Four Strong Winds," "The La's," "Piper at the Gates of Dawn," "Got What We Want," "North Country Maid," "Stay Happy," "Los Angeles," "Back in the USA," "Help!,"We Did Not Know The Forest Spirit Made The Flowers Grow," "The Slider," "Electric Warrior," "Young, Loud, and Snotty," "Darkness on the Edge of Town," "Blackout" (yes I mean the Britney Spears album) and everything else, because I might actually legitimately like some of you more. See? I am bad at picking favorites.

"Is This It," The Strokes

This is the album that made me realize that guitars make noises that I want to hear. After 13 years of pretty much only consciously hearing top 40 and young country radio, I always wondered why people played guitar. Then I heard it clearly for the first time. Game changer. Plus I saw Julian's face. His weird, kinda greasy, kinda zitty face, but still great face. Game changer.




"The Velvet Underground & Nico," The Velvet Underground

Blah blah blah, what an influential album for the world, blah blah blah. No, really. When I listen to this album now, 8 years later, I feel like that same geeky teen stealing timpani mallets from the band room and buying cuban-heeled boots from Zappos.com to look like a picture of the Velvet Underground. This album is why I had my first real crush, why I started playing drums, why I spent roughly a year locked in my bedroom in between school days learning their entire catalog and writing nerdy fan letters to Maureen Tucker.



Sophomore


"Marquee Moon" Television

I didn't get it at first. But when I finally did, I listened to "Prove It" on my discman in between every class for a month and made Tom Verlaine (and Richard Hell, since a Voidoids obsession soon followed) shirts with sharpie. NERD ALERT. This carried on through the following summer, as shown by my junior school pic: weird quasi boy hair, braces, black t-shirt with Television pin that went through the wash.

"Dinosaur," Dinosaur Jr

This was the first Dinosaur Jr album I bought, from Neptune Records in Royal Oak back when Royal Oak still had (at least one) record store. Sure, it's kinda erratic, but I don't care because "The Leper" made me wanna marry J. Mascis. The winter of senior year I'm pretty sure wore my purple Dinosaur tour shirt at least twice a week. Once I started being obsessed with Neil Young, I cared about them even more because they also are geeks for Ol' Shakey.

Break it up Pt. 2!

So here I am again, on my lunch break at work. Maybe this will be when I BLOG from now on.

Three things:

1. I think someone just took a picture of the back of my head. Is it because I haven't washed my hair since ... is it bad that I don't remember? Wednesday? Dry shampoo, y'all. Deadbeat Beat should have an endorsement.

2. I couldn't fall asleep last night until 2:30 am so I TOTALLY could have gone out anyway.

3. On my 15-minute break earlier this morning I started reading Kate Gosselin's book "I Just Want You to Know." She kept using the phrase "six tiny faces."

In band news,

We have some new songs. Can't wait to record everything! Word on the street is that we're playing July 1 at the (PJ's) Lager House w/ other bands that might include Kommie and the Sugarcoats. Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be a BALL!

Break it up!

Totally on my break at the bookstore. The Internet never works at work except today! I'm not gonna talk about what's happened at work so far because you're not supposed to post about that sort of stuff on the Internet!

However, I will say that I am bummed that I'm working until 11 pm tonight + opening at 8 am tomorrow morning because I kinda wanted to go see Kommie Kilpatrick. If I still worked at LBD I'd probably go anyway because customers couldn't really see if I was sleep deprived/hung over because I could hide behind a counter. And my face was always flushed because of the pizza oven anyway. But at the bookstore I have to help people find things and sell them e-readers and memberships, so how my face looks matters a little bit more. And I guess at the deli I didn't have to be in until 10 am on Saturdays anyway. Which was so much cooler than every other morning I worked, which began at 7 am!!!!! Oh man, all this talking about food service jobs makes me miss them already.

Hmm, what else can I BLOG about? Alex always posts pictures/vids so I'm trying to offset them with text so our BLOG seems more legit. I guess I'll talk about things I've been digging lately:

day off

Cloudy day in Ferndale, MI. Day off. Went to bank, made accidentally weak coffee. Washed clothes from Value World. Tried not to step on broken glass in basement with bare feet.

Sittin in room lookin at new records. Alex and I have been buying records left and right lately! At places other than Car City! A couple days ago I went to Record Time by myself and bought:

"Palace of Swords Reversed," a compilation by the Fall
"Drop Out With the Barracudas," the Barracudas
"The Best of Love" by Love because I wanted to have a Love album to listen to on my record player and I'm probably not gonna find "Da Capo" or "Forever Changes" for cheap any time soon
"Between the Buttons," the Rolling Stones
Annnnd the remastered "Raw Power" (meaning the original Bowie version of it) by the Stooges for Lee's b-day!

A few days earlier Alex and I went to the Record Collector by our house and I got:

"Old Ways" by Neil Young because I'm working on having every NY record ever because I'm a dweeb
a Kim Fowley-selected compilation called "Kim Fowley's Hollywood Confidential"
"Sweetheart of the Rodeo" by the Byrds
Annnnd "Younger Than Yesterday" by the Byrds

So basically, whenever I break down and buy some records, I'm more than likely to just buy albums from bands that I already like, or I buy different formats of albums I already have. Oops. But, it's nice having albums to listen to on yer record player.

Since now I have no money, maybe I'll use this time to 1) hope I don't overdraft my checking account and 2) think about other records I should get. It would be cool if I didn't already own them, or listen to the band. Any suggestions Internet?
